Deadline for Defence abuse claims approaches

Those thinking about reporting an allegation of sexual or other abuse while in Defence must do so by 31 May 2013, Defence Minister Stephen Smith and Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus have reminded.

The Defence Abuse Response Taskforce established in November 2012 is responsible for assessing individual abuse claims alleged to have occurred before 11 April 2011.

Notice of allegations must be registered with the Taskforce via phone or email.

The Taskforce will then determine appropriate outcomes in consultation with individuals making the allegations.

“These outcomes could include a referral to counselling and possible restorative processes, including apologies from appropriate Defence officers, a reparation payment of up to $50,000, and referral of appropriate matters to police or military justice authorities”, according to Mr Smith and Mr Dreyfus.

Further information about the Taskforce is available here.
